SUMMARY:2024 Shepherd Nature Trail Tour
DESCRIPTION:Shepherd Nature Trail Guided Tour\nPOSTPONED to Saturday\, Sept
 ember 7 from 9-11:30am\nRAIN DATE: Sunday\, September 8 from 9-11:30am.\n\
nJoin Duke Forest Senior Program Coordinator\, Maggie Heraty\, for a guide
d tour of the Shepherd Nature Trail\, Duke Forest’s one and only interpr
etive trail. This introductory tour is an opportunity for both new and sea
soned Duke Forest visitors to gain deeper insight into what makes the Shep
herd Nature trail—and the land it traverses—so special. Learn more abo
ut the human and natural history of the area and about the important teach
ing and research mission of the Duke Forest. Maggie will invite participan
ts to contemplate the land’s past and present and consider the roles we
all play in shaping this forest over time. In return\, you’ll find that
the Shepherd Nature Trail is the place to show (and impress) your nature-
and history-loving friends!\n\nAudience: This tour is geared toward adult
audiences (ages 18+). Any minors interested in participating must have a p
arent or guardian present and have an active interest in the subject.\n\nA
ccessibility:\n\n Tour participants will be on their feet throughout this
2.5-hour tour\, walking and standing during short presentations.\n The S
hepherd Nature Trail is a 0.8-mile loop in total. It is considered easy fo
r an average hiker. However\, it includes unpaved walking surfaces (gravel
and dirt footpaths)\, short uphill and downhill sections\, and foot-bridg
e crossings. We invite participants to bring trekking poles or a walking s
tick if needed.\n There are NO BATHROOMS in the tour area\, so please pla
n accordingly.\n Parking is available and will be directed by Duke Forest
staff.\n Our registration form includes a question where you can share d
etails about any accessibility needs you may have. If you have accessibili
ty considerations that you would like to make our staff aware of\, please
let us know.\n\n&nbsp\;\nRegistration is now full.\n&nbsp\;\nSpace is limi
ted to 20 participants.\nIn an effort to increase the reach of our tours\,
the first 10 tour slots will be first-come\, first-served\, and the remai
ning slots will be filled from a waitlist. Our tours are small and often f
ill quickly\, and we hope to engage a mix of folks new to the Duke Forest
and past participants. Thank you for your understanding.\nFull event detai
ls—including location and parking directions—will be sent to confirmed
tour participants within 7 business days. A reminder email will be sent a
  week prior to the event.\n\n&nbsp\;\n\n[gallery size="medium" ids="10200\
