We look forward to seeing you at the Duke Forest’s Annual Gathering, where new and longstanding community members will come together to celebrate and explore the Forest’s deep-rooted connection with Duke University. This year, we’re excited to bring the event to campus as a Duke Centennial celebration. The program will include welcome remarks from Duke University President Vincent Price and a presentation from Duke Forest Executive Director Sara Childs on the intertwined history of the Forest and the University from their founding through their first hundred years. This will be followed by a panel discussion on the future of the Duke Forest moderated by Stanback Dean of the Nicholas School of the Environment Lori Bennear.
Event Highlights:
- Presentation: Duke Forest Executive Director Sara Childs will share a story of the Forest’s origins and its connections to the formation of Duke University and the School of Forestry. She will also describe the myriad ways the Duke Forest Teaching and Research Laboratory remains an incredible resource for Duke and the greater community.
- Panel Discussion: Following this historical journey, an esteemed panel moderated by Lori Bennear, Stanback Dean of the Nicholas School, will discuss the future of the Duke Forest. Together, the panelists will share their vision and insight around the role of Duke Forest in Duke’s 2nd century, including its ongoing contributions to Duke’s Climate Commitment, teaching and research, and regional partnerships. Attendees will better understand and appreciate how the Forest will continue serving as a critical asset to both the University and the surrounding community. Panelists include:
