Plants

Over 900 species of plants, including more than 100 species of trees, have been identified in the Duke Forest. The major forest types are pine, pine-hardwood, upland hardwood, and bottomland hardwood. Although much of the Forest was initially planted, small natural stands of pine over 110 years old and hardwood stands over 200 years old occur in the Forest. The Forest contains some of the best examples of mature, second-growth forest communities remaining in the North Carolina piedmont.
