POSTPONED!

Unfortunately, a front is moving in and the forecast is predicting periods of heavy rain on Saturday, October 14. We are now postponing the Management & Stewardship Tour to the rain date. The tour is now scheduled for Saturday, October 21 from 9am to 12pm.

Come look through our staff’s eyes, and discover how our team cares for the Duke Forest.

Management & Stewardship Tour

RAIN DATE: Saturday, October 21 from 9am to 12pm

As a living laboratory and outdoor classroom, the Duke Forest has taught countless students, generated innumerable scientific articles, and launched the careers of many well-respected scientists. Additionally, since its inception, the Duke Forest has engaged the surrounding public community, by offering educational and volunteer opportunities and allowing recreation as an ancillary benefit to the Forest’s existence. But, what makes the Duke Forest such a valuable setting for teaching, research, or community engagement?  It’s our staff’s stewardship and forest management priorities that underpin it all!

The everyday work of our staff provides the foundation for the healthy ecosystems, diverse habitat types, and abundant flora, fauna, and fungi that thrive in the Duke Forest. In turn, the landscape is ripe for scientific discovery, for community engagement programs, and yes, for nature hikes. Join the Duke Forest for a special, behind-the-scenes look at the activities that our staff undertake daily to care for this unique land base.

Audience: This tour is geared toward adult audiences (ages 18+). Any minors interested in participating must have a parent or guardian present and have an active interest in the subject.

Accessibility:

  • Tour participants will be on their feet throughout this 3-hour tour, walking between featured sites and standing while listening to presentations. This will include walking on unpaved or gravel surfaces, short uphill and downhill sections, and traversing through grassy fields and between trees. We invite you to bring along a walking stick or trekking poles if you need.
  • There are NO BATHROOMS in the tour area, so please plan accordingly. For desperate situations only, an outhouse is available, but it is a 10-minute walk from the tour location.
  • Parking is available and will be directed by Duke Forest staff.
  • Our registration form includes a question where you can share details about any accessibility needs you may have. If you have accessibility considerations that you’d like to make our staff aware of, please let us know!

Register here.

Space is limited to 25 participants and is first-come, first-served. Once the first 25 spaces are filled, interested participants will be added to a waitlist.

Participants will be informed of their registration status within 7 business days. Full event details—including driving and parking directions— will then be sent to registered tour participants during the week prior to the event.
